Seasonal Section Grower (Direct Care Worker Horticulture Plant Care) Workplace: Carleton, MI Job Title: Seasonal Section Grower Job Type: Full‑Time Seasonal Time Frame: January through June; December through May Pay Starting at $17.35/hour for entry‑level candidates, with a shift premium for weekend work. Pay may increase based on skills, experience, and education. Merit increases are available at the beginning of subsequent seasons. We are a founding partner of the national plant brand Proven Winners® and operate a state‑of‑the‑art greenhouse complex. Our culture is collaborative, casual, and focused on teamwork. Job Summary As a Section Grower you will produce high‑quality ornamental plant material, maintaining crops, schedules, and sanitary standards. You will work independently after training, support new team members, and contribute ideas for process improvements. Pay Notable Note Please note that we do not grow cannabis crops. Essential Functions • Establish priorities, work independently, and accomplish objectives with minimal supervision after training. Perform daily walkthroughs to create and then follow daily action plans. Correctly care for crops as trained. Refer to and adjust care sheets as needed. Correctly record daily work on documentation sheets. • Accurately judge watering needs of the crops with minimal instruction after training. • Accurately irrigate crops using hoses, booms, sprinklers or other automated devices in order to avoid extremes of too dry or too wet for each crop. Repeated bending, pulling, and lifting are required. • Accurately communicate the status of all assigned jobs with your team members. • Mix and apply the correct fertilizer at the correct rate consistently, lifting 25‑lb bags from the ground to above waist level. • Keep work areas clean, organized, and sanitary, utilizing an industrial power washer, lifting trays, pulling carts, and tossing containers of plants. • Effectively identify insect, disease, or virus in crops after training. • Mix and apply chemicals and bio‑controls as needed following all safety requirements listed on the product label. • Mentor and train others as needed to enable the success of the team. • Actively contribute to the continued success of the company by proposing new ideas that can lower costs, improve profits, and enhance efficiency. Design and implement experiments that benefit individuals, the team, or the company. • Develop goals and standards for yourself in an interactive process with your team leaders. • Embrace training and/or self‑educate to become an expert on each crop and each piece of greenhouse equipment used in the assigned area. • Promote a safety culture by performing all aspects of your job following all safety standards. Identify and report any safety issues or concerns without delay. • Accurately use the time clock to change jobs so that all costs can be tracked and analyzed for company profitability. • Lay down, space or move any plant material as required for crop health. Discard/dump plant material as assigned. Accurately record dumped plant material. • Collect soil samples so we can monitor pH and EC and make timely adjustments to produce quality crops on time. Essential Work Habits • Maintain a positive and cooperative attitude with all employees and across all departments. Promote positive morale by working effectively as a team member across departments. • Adjust schedule seasonally as needed. Willing to work more or fewer hours depending on the needs of the department. Work weekends and holidays as necessary. • Report to work on time as scheduled, maintaining a level of absences that results in minimal departmental disruption. • Utilize equipment only after completing the required training, including but not limited to Sprayers, Power Washers, Injectors, Tow Carts, Hi‑Lows, Scissor Lifts, Ladders, etc. • Perform all work as quickly and efficiently as possible, without compromising quality. • Participate in education programs as they are offered and continue to self‑educate when new plants, equipment, or techniques are introduced. Essential Skills • Anticipate potential crises to avoid crop loss or lack of availability. • Recognize and solve both crop‑related and equipment‑related problems. Communicate with department leaders as needed to reach a timely resolution. • Properly use, clean, and maintain all equipment as trained. Troubleshoot repairs and report results to department leaders. Use the Argus system to accurately and efficiently water crops. Correctly use VPD to irrigate crops using booms, flood floors, echo lines, HB lines, etc. • Apply PGR applications accurately as directed. Physical Aspects • Bulk job spent standing or walking, bending to the ground and reaching overhead, pulling carts on 4‑wheel casters weighing over 200 lbs. • Lifting a minimum of 25 ...
